Dr. Hamrick’s road to Knoxville has been a meandering one. After growing up in Indiana, he earned his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University. He then returned home to attend IU School of Medicine, where he received his MD. Afterwards, he braved the cold of Minnesota to take advantage of a unique training opportunity, blending Internal Medicine and Dermatology. Once he completed this rigorous five-year program, serving one year as Chief Resident, he joined his longsuffering wife in Knoxville. Never one to shy away from a challenge, he then undertook Dermatology and Internal Medicine Boards within one month of each other.
Dr. Hamrick has taken positions with Dermatology Associates and the Department of Internal Medicine at University of Tennessee Medical Center, continuing his involvement in both specialties. His Dermatologic interests include general Dermatology, pediatrics, complex medical Dermatology, and cutaneous Oncology. He dovetails these with his interests in medical education, primary care, and inpatient consultation with the Department of Internal Medicine. He is excited to work with learners at all stages as they progress in medical training. Additionally, he is passionate about ensuring that all people, regardless of illness or perception by the rest of society, are treated with the dignity, kindness, and attention they deserve.
Outside of work, Dr. Hamrick enjoys hiking, kayaking, electronic media, cooking, movies, and music. He and his wife have also been able to rekindle their participation in ballroom dance since their reunion. Much to his chagrin, he lacks the constitution to withstand the highs and lows of avid sports fandom, but this allows him to be a neutral spectator.
